Legionella bacteria found in cooling towers

October 09, 2012
Legionella bacteria were found in seven water samples collected from cooling towers in seven buildings in September, the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department says today.

It also said the bacterial count in the samples was at or above the upper threshold, which is 1,000 colony-forming units per millilitre.

The samples were taken at Shun Shing Building and Fu Hang Building, Tuen Mun; 34 Luen Shing Street, Fanling; 87 Percival Street and Prosperous Commercial Building, Causeway Bay; Block A, Mai Hing Industrial Building and Manning Industrial Building, Kwun Tong.

The department issued nuisance notices to the owners of these cooling towers requiring them to undertake appropriate disinfection work.

Disinfection at Block A, Mai Hing Industrial Building and Manning Industrial Building, Kwun Tong, is being arranged. Owners have completed disinfection of the five other cooling towers.
