Water safety standard enhanced
July 13, 2012
The Centre for Food Safety will adopt a more stringent radiological standard for testing the safety of bottled and packaged water imported from all countries, from August 1.
The new standard complies with the health-related requirements of the most recent Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality published by the World Health Organisation, including the radiological standard.
The department has been following the same standards for the quality of drinking water in Hong Kong.
The Expert Committee on Food Safety, which consists of food experts from overseas and the Mainland as well as local experts, support the adoption of the new radiological standard for bottled and packaged water. The centre has also consulted the trade on the new standard.
