February 25, 2012
The Centre for Health Protection has identified an imported case of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase 1 producing Enterobacteriaceae in an 82-year-old man, Hong Kong’s sixth case of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The man, a frequent traveller to the Mainland, was a Hong Kong resident with good past health. He went to his home on the Mainland on January 6. A neighbour found him there unconscious on February 6.
He was admitted to a Mainland hospital on the same day and was later found to have a wound on the back of his head.
He was transferred to Hong Kong and admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital on February 11, with a fever. He was diagnosed with pneumonia.
He tested positive for Enterobacteriaceae on February 17. He is now in stable condition.
