Situation stable:  Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow announces the sale of local live chickens and the import of Mainland ones will resume on January 12.

Live chicken sales to resume

January 11, 2012
Sale of local live chickens and the import of Mainland ones will resume tomorrow.

Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow made the announcement today, saying Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department staff have inspected all 30 local farms, and 4,500 chickens have tested negative for the H5N1 avian influenza virus.

All chilled chicken samples are also satisfactory, and there has been no report of bird flu cases at hospitals.

The Government will adjust its response level from “serious” to “alert” level, as the bird flu risk for Hong Kong has stabilised.

Cheung Sha Wan Wholesale Poultry Market has been cleaned and will open for business tomorrow. Imports of live Mainland chickens will also resume.

Sales and imports were suspended after a dead bird was found to be infected with the H5N1 virus last month.
