Sale of Taiwan drinks halted

July 26, 2011
Centre for Food Safety has instructed Taiwan-style drinks shop Guo Tze Bar to stop selling its peach red tea and lychee red tea which have been found to contain a plasticiser.

The dietary exposure estimation on the peach red tea sample showed the exposure to the plasticiser by both average consumers with daily consumption of about 250ml of the drink and high consumers with daily consumption of about 460ml of the drink would exceed the safety reference value, which may pose a risk to human health upon long-term consumption.

Regarding the lychee red tea sample, the exposure to the plasticiser from daily consumption by even high consumers would not exceed the safety reference value but the centre has instructed the shop to stop sales as a precautionary measure.
