20 tots ill in respiratory tract infection outbreak

July 14, 2011
The Centre for Health Protection is investigating an upper respiratory tract infection outbreak at a residential childcare centre in Causeway Bay involving 20 children aged two or below.

The 11 boys and nine girls developed symptoms including fever, runny nose, cough and sore throat since June 22.

Six of them were hospitalised but have been discharged. All are in stable condition. Lab tests from five of the affected children tested positive for adenovirus.

The Centre for Health Protection sent staff to visit the centre and provide health advice.

Adenovirus infection is usually transmitted by air droplets, direct contact of the oro-nasal secretions or faecal-oral transmission and can occur throughout the year.
