Warning issued on 23 food items from Taiwan

June 07, 2011
The Centre for Food Safety today called on the food trade to immediately stop the use and sale of 23 kinds of fruit syrup and juice produced in Taiwan that might have been contaminated with plasticiser di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate.

The centre has contacted the importer of the 12 syrup items, Good Young (HK), and noted it had suspended the sale and initiated a recall of the products. The syrup items are food ingredients that are solely for supply to the catering industry.

The importer has been instructed to immediately stop the use and sale of the concerned products until test results are found to be satisfactory.

The centre is also trying to trace an importer of the fruit and honey juice, fruit juice and pulp. It is understood that a clouding agent is believed to have been used in the ingredients for those food and drinks, which has been adulterated with the plasticiser.
