Japanese products safe

March 31, 2011

The Security Bureau said the radiation level of fresh water in Hong Kong has remained normal for the last 24 hours up to noon today, while food and products imported from Japan have also passed radiation tests.

The radioactivity level of all samples taken by the Water Supplies Department showed no change. The radiological quality of fresh water remains normal and safe.

The Hong Kong Observatory said the radiation level in Hong Kong's atmosphere also remains normal. A very minute amount of artificial radionuclide Iodine-131 was detected in air samples collected from noon March 29 to noon March 30 but it will not affect public health and no precautionary measures are required.

Customs officers have checked 10,605 air consignments and 48 sea containers, including three consignments of pharmaceutical products and 15 of cosmetics. No irregularities have been detected.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department has continued to collect samples from local fish culture zones and fish wholesale markets for radiological testing. All results are satisfactory.

Twenty-four food samples imported from Japan have been tested by the Centre for Food Safety. All were satisfactory.

The Immigration Department is still looking for two Hong Kong people missing in Japan since the earthquake and tsunami in the country earlier this month. The department said it will continue to monitor the two cases and take whatever action is appropriate.
