Air radiation hazard unlikely

March 30, 2011

Radiation from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan will unlikely affect Hong Kong via air or sea currents, experts say.

This was the message today from Secretary for Food & Health Dr York Chow who emphasised Hong Kong’s radiation level is within normal limits and is not hazardous to citizens.

“We will for now focus more on imports of Japanese products that may be contaminated, particularly food. We will continue the monitoring as well as the daily testing of all the targeted products, for example all the food imported from Japan. If we detect anything, we will ensure it will not go on the market.”

He said testing will continue until it is confirmed there is no further risk.

Meanwhile, when asked about the rising number of pregnant women coming from the Mainland, Dr Chow said the Government will discuss the issue with paediatrics service providers to find a solution.

He said the escalating issue puts pressure on Hong Kong’s obstetrics services, neonatal intensive care units and paediatrics services.

“I think this is a real problem we need to tackle,” he said.
