Dangerous drugs recalled

March 10, 2011

The Department of Health today urged people to stop using two products - Venergy and Gold Seagull Long Zhi Wan -  as they were each found to contain a potent unregistered Western drug.

Venergy was found to contain sildenafil, used for treating male sexual dysfunction. Side effects can include low blood pressure, dizziness, headache, visual disturbances, vomiting. It may even cause death if blood pressure becomes dangerously low. It may also interact with other prescription drugs, such as the common cardiac drug nitroglycerin.

Gold Seagull Long Zhi Wan was found to contain glibenclamide, used for treating diabetes mellitus. Side effects may include nausea and gastro-intestinal upset. Improper use may lead to a fall in blood-sugar levels, which can also be fatal.

The department has instructed Venergy’s distributor GE Top International Trading Limited to recall the product. Customers can call its hotline, 2219 8188.

Gold Seagull Long Zhi Wan is a registered proprietary Chinese medicine supplier with the registration number HKP-02601. Distributor Wing Hong Medicine Company is also recalling the product. People can call 2605 6216 for enquiries.
