New year fireworks set for Feb 4

February 01, 2011

More than 30,000 pyrotechnic shells will be fired from four barges in the Lunar New Year fireworks display on February 4, to ring in the Year of the Rabbit.

Sponsored by the Hongkong Hainan Commercial Association and co-ordinated by the Home Affairs Bureau, the 23-minute show will start at 8pm over Victoria Harbour, consisting of eight scenes.

Highlights of the display include the characters for "2011", a rabbit's face and a "smiley" image to represent the golden rabbit welcoming spring, a display of colourful coconut trees to reflect the Hainan people's hospitality, and the message "I love Hong Kong".

The display can be seen from many vantage points on both sides of the harbour, including Tsim Sha Tsui, Mid-levels, Central District, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay and Hung Hom Bypass. More than 500,000 spectators are expected to line both sides of the harbour to view the display.

To enjoy the display to the full, onlookers are invited to tune to Radio Television Hong Kong Radio Four (FM 97.6 - 98.9) for synchronised music.

In conjunction with the fireworks display, the HongKong Hainan Commercial Association has also organised a photo contest on the Lunar New Year fireworks display to encourage more people to capture the moments of festive joy.
