New arts advisory body formed

October 28, 2010

An advisory committee will be formed to advise the Secretary for Home Affairs on local arts development, taking over the key functions of two other performing arts committees which will wind up at the end of October.

The Advisory Committee on Arts Development will advise on the use of the arts portion of the Arts & Sport Development Fund, including the formulation of themes and priorities for inviting arts and cultural proposals, as well as the assessment of applications received. It will also look at issues relating to the operation of matching grants under the arts portion of the Arts & Sport Development Fund, including the assessment of applications received for matching grants.

The committee's terms of reference also include advising on funding policies and strategies, like the review of the funding mechanism for the major performing arts groups, the promotion of cultural exchange and assessment of applications received under the Arts Development Fund, and strengthening cultural software.

Operating with an expanded ambit, the committee will replace the Committee on Performing Arts and the Funding Committee for the Performing Arts.

All committee members are appointed for two years from November 1. Chaired by Chung Shui-ming, members will be Kelly Chan, Irving Koo, Lam Pun-lee, Harold Mok, Stella Lee, Maurice Lee, Cecilia Leung, Nancy Loo, Mui Cheuk-yin, Dorothy Ng and Ernie Suek. Representatives from the Home Affairs Bureau, Leisure & Cultural Services Department and Hong Kong Arts Development Council will be the ex-officio members.
