Economic discussion:  Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury Prof KC Chan speaks at the 8th World Chinese Economic Summit in Malaysia.

Secretary for Financial Services & the Treasury Prof KC Chan attended the 8th World Chinese Economic Summit in Malacca, Malaysia, today.

 

Speaking at the Europe-China-ASEAN Partnership session, Prof Chan said the Belt & Road Initiative will play a prominent role in promoting economic development and trade.

 

He said, through channelling Asian savings into Asian investments, financial opening up and integration is seen as a way to support sustainable economic growth and enhance regional financial stability in the long run.

 

"I see these to be opportunities for Asia, because this is the region that will benefit from infrastructure investment, and this is the region that can build up the financial expertise to support this growth."

 

He called for a partnership among China, Europe and Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries in developing technological improvement.

 

Arriving in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, Prof Chan met representatives of the Association of Banks in Malaysia and the senior management of Maybank.

 

This morning he visited the Kuala Lumpur stock exchange to learn about its Islamic finance and securities business.

 

He will return to Hong Kong tomorrow.
