The Census & Statistics Department today released the latest household expenditure survey and introduced the newly based Consumer Price Indices.
The share of household expenditure on housing has increased from 31.66% to 34.29% from 2009-10 to 2014-15, due to the rise in private housing rentals over the past five years.
Meanwhile, the share on food fell from 27.45% to 27.29%; transport dropped from 8.44% to 7.98%; and clothing and footwear decreased from 3.45% to 3.21%.
All other sectors recorded drops in expenditure share, including electricity, gas and water, alcohol and tobacco, durable goods, miscellaneous goods and miscellaneous services.
Announcing the results at a press conference today, Deputy Commissioner for Census & Statistics Stephen Leung said the expenditure brackets and weights for the consumer price indices are updated every five years by conducting a household expenditure survey.
The latest survey was conducted from October 2014 to September 2015. About 6,800 households participated in the survey, representing a 72% response rate.
