Gregory So promotes HK food

May 16, 2012
Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So continued his Japan visit in Tokyo today, promoting Hong Kong as a tourist destination for great food.

Attending the Chinese Food Exhibition 2012, Mr So said there are more than 12,000 eateries in Hong Kong. Most are Chinese restaurants serving not only native Cantonese cuisine, but also food from Shanghai, Sichuan, Fujian and Inner Mongolia.

"In 2011 we welcomed a record of almost 42 million visitors to our city. They spent $20 billion on dining out in Hong Kong. Around 1.3 million visitors were from Japan, making the country our third largest source of inbound tourists," Mr So said, calling for more Japanese travellers to visit Hong Kong.

Tomorrow he will travel to Osaka to attend the Think Global, Think Hong Kong Symposium and meet local officials.
