HK tops Open Markets Index
December 18, 2011
Hong Kong has been ranked the world's most open market, with a score of 5.4 on a scale of one to six, in the first Open Markets Index.
The index ranks 75 economies based on a variety of criteria, including trade openness, trade policy, trade-enabling infrastructure, and Foreign Direct Investment Openness. Hong Kong did well across the board.
The International Chamber of Commerce said the index will help companies evaluate the pros and cons of doing business in specific countries.
Secretary for Commerce & Economic Development Gregory So said it is important to maintain free and open markets to guard against protectionism.
He said the index helps measure trade openness on a global basis, particularly at a time of economic downturn and various financial crises.
