Three importers and two recycling site operators were fined a total of $107,000 by Fanling Magistracy today for illegally importing and handling hazardous electronic waste.
Collaborating with the Customs & Excise Department, the Environmental Protection Department intercepted three containers carrying hazardous e-waste at Kwai Chung Container Terminals during a series of operations from December to February.
The department also seized a large quantity of chemical waste at two Yuen Long recycling sites.
The market value of the hazardous e-waste intercepted was $1.6 million.
The department reminded waste recycling trade importers and recycling site operators, not to illegally import hazardous e-waste into Hong Kong or unlawfully handle chemical waste.
