Four importers were fined $55,000 in total by Fanling Magistracy today for illegally importing hazardous electronic waste.
In co-operation with the Customs & Excise Department, the Environmental Protection Department intercepted five containers carrying a large quantity of hazardous e-waste at Kwai Chung Container Terminals in January and February.
The market value of the haul was $260,000.
The traders were convicted for violating the Waste Disposal Ordinance.
The Environmental Protection Department said hazardous e-waste containing heavy metals and other toxic chemicals should be handled properly.
