Two importers were fined $15,000 in total by Fanling Magistracy today for illegally importing hazardous electronic waste.
In co-operation with the Customs & Excise Department, the Environmental Protection Department intercepted a large quantity of waste printed circuit boards inside two containers at Kwai Chung Container Terminals in September.
The market value of the haul was $220,000.
The containers were sent back to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The traders were convicted for violating the Waste Disposal Ordinance.
The Environmental Protection Department said hazardous electronic waste containing heavy metals and other toxic chemicals should be handled properly.
