Man jailed for smuggling turtles

April 10, 2017

A 26-year-old man was jailed for two months by West Kowloon Magistracy today for smuggling endangered turtles.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department said 98 three-keeled land tortoises, 27 Indian pond turtles, two Bengal roof turtles and one Pangshura turtle were found by Customs & Excise Department officers in the defendant's luggage when he arrived from Dhaka yesterday.

Importing, exporting or re-exporting endangered species warrants up to two-years' jail and a $5 million fine.
