No-waste fete

No-waste fete:  Environmental Campaign Committee Chairman Lam Chiu-ying (centre) and Conservancy Association Deputy Chief Executive Rico Wong (right) visit the first-ever Green Lunar New Year Fair.

The first-ever Green Lunar New Year Fair has been set up at Cheung Sha Wan Playground.

Co-organised by the Environmental Protection Department, the Environmental Campaign Committee and the Conservancy Association, the fair will boost environmental awareness among stall operators and shoppers.

Numerous stall operators have pledged to adopt a series of environmentally-friendly measures, like using fewer plastic bags and disposable utensils, donating unsold goods to the needy, and recycling waste materials properly.

Visiting the fair today, committee Chairman Lam Chiu-ying advised shoppers to bring their own shopping bags and handkerchiefs, to use reusable cutlery and water bottles, and to avoid using disposable items.

To reduce plastic bag use, the fair has shopping bag sharing stands where shoppers can donate or pick up a reusable shopping bag.

The association has established waste reduction centres for stall operators to donate unsold dry goods for distribution to the needy.

Waste materials generated on site, including canvas, decorations, sand bags, polyfoam and bamboo sticks, will be properly sorted for recycling, reuse and donation.
