Cave close:  Visitors enjoy unobstructed view of a sea cave formation off East Dam, using a wooden boardwalk.

Visitors to the High Island Reservoir can view a sea cave formation up close and safe, thanks to a 50 metre wooden boardwalk built by the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department.

The reservoir in Sai Kung is one of Hong Kong's most popular geological sites and one of eight areas in the city's geopark.

Around the reservoir, especially the East Dam, visitors can see impressive hexagonal rock columns.

An extraordinary geological formation is a sea cave, which was formed by erosion from pounding waves. The boardwalk offers an unobstructed view of the formation.

Country Parks Officer Eric Chan said anti-corrosion treatment will allow the boardwalk to be used for 50 years. Drilling and piling were avoided during construction to preserve the natural environment.

The department and the Sai Kung District Community Centre have organised a shuttle bus tour service during weekends and public holidays so visitors of all ages can visit the area.

The bus can be taken from the Sai Kung Volcano Discovery Centre to the East Dam.

A tour guide on the bus will discuss the formation of the volcanic rock columns and the history of the reservoir area.
