The Environmental Protection Department has launched an investigation into the alleged illegal importation of hazardous electronic waste to Hong Kong.
The move came tonight after a media report about imports of hazardous electronic waste from overseas.
The department is looking into the recycling sites concerned.
It has contacted international environmental organisation Basel Action Network for information to help in the investigation. It has also urged the organisation to provide US authorities with information to facilitate interception at source.
The department will also contact US environmental protection authorities about the matter.
It said the illegal importation of hazardous electronic waste to Hong Kong will not be tolerated.
