Gov't to promote proper litter disposal

June 16, 2016

The Food & Environmental Hygiene Department will enhance publicity to educate people that street bins are for the disposal of small rubbish only.

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong gave these remarks today in response to the introduction of the new litter bins being distributed across Hong Kong.

The redesigned bins have smaller openings and have been generally supported by green groups.

The smaller openings are to discourage the dumping of household waste and large garbage bags in and outside of city litter bins.

Mr Wong said people's behaviour must be changed. Publicity on proper litter disposal will be enhanced.

The department will also publicise the Government's long-term vision for the quantity-based Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme, he added.
