Prosecution set for illegal dumping

April 06, 2016

The Environmental Protection Department will prosecute a transportation contractor, a lorry driver and a site supervisor over the illegal dumping of construction waste at a Deep Bay site.

An interdepartmental investigation was launched after illegal land filling was reported in Tsim Bei Tsui in December.

The one-hectare area of natural mangroves has been excavated and covered by fill materials. Most of it is government land, the bulk of which is zoned "Site of Special Scientific Interest" while a small part is zoned "Green Belt".

The case involves contravention of the Waste Disposal Ordinance and violates the Environmental Impact Assessment Ordinance.

The Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department is examining ways to restore the affected area to safeguard its ecology.
