Hikers fined for contamination

October 12, 2015

Five hikers were fined $1,000 each at Tsuen Wan Magistracy today for contaminating a water gathering ground.

Working with the Water Supplies Department, Police arrested 10 people in May for illegally entering a water gathering ground in Shui Lo Cho in Yi O on Lantau Island, and contaminating fresh water resources.

Five earlier pleaded guilty at Eastern Magistracy and were fined $500 each. The rest were convicted today.

The department said gathering grounds and reservoirs are sources of fresh water and should not be entered. They are also prone to serious flooding and dangerous.

Anyone who bathes or washes in waterworks faces two-years' jail and a $50,000 fine.
