September 23, 2015

Environmental outpost

Environmental outpost:  The Eastern Community Green Station has opened in Shau Kei Wan.

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong opened the Eastern Community Green Station today to help boost environmental education and encourage waste reduction and recycling by collecting low value recyclables.

He said the station, in Shau Kei Wan, will become a green landmark because of its pristine and practical design.

It will collect low-value recyclables such as electrical appliances, compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent tubes, glass bottles and rechargeable batteries, which will be delivered to qualified recyclers for proper treatment and turning waste into resources.

The operator will also promote clean recycling and other green messages through various public education activities such as exhibitions, seminars and workshops, to improve both the quantity and quality of recyclables collected.

Built with container modules, the facility won the Green Building Award 2014 merit award, and received positive feedback from visitors during its trial period.

Located at 30 Oi Shun Road, the station will be operated by the Po Leung Kuk under a three-year service contract.

It will be open to public 8am to 8pm daily.

The Government is developing green stations in other districts, such as Yuen Long and Kwun Tong which will be completed next year.
