Hong Kong experienced its hottest day since records began, with temperatures hitting 36.3 degrees Celsius this afternoon, breaking the last record of 36.1 degrees set in 1990.
Record-breaking temperatures were also recorded in other parts of the city including Happy Valley (37.9 degrees), Sheung Shui (37.8 degrees), Wong Tai Sin (37.6 degrees), Tseung Kwan O (37.6 degrees) and Sham Shui Po (37.3 degrees).
The Observatory noted that under the influence of tropical cyclone Soudelor, temperatures over inland Guangdong reached 40 degrees or above.
It added that as northwesterly winds prevailed over Hong Kong today, the hotter air mass over Guangdong was brought to Hong Kong, leading to an extremely hot day.
