Water work:  Secondary students and teachers join the shore cleanup activity at Wu Kai Sha.

The Inter-departmental Working Group on Clean Shorelines and Sheung Shui Government Secondary School jointly held a Shorelines Cleanup Day at Wu Kai Sha today.

About a dozen students and teachers participated and collected 30.2 kilogrammes of refuse, most of which was disposable plastic.

The refuse was sorted and recorded according to guidelines provided by the Environmental Protection Department.

The department said people should treasure the beautiful shorelines, which provide popular destinations for relaxation during the hot summer and serve as an essential habitat for wildlife.

The Inter-departmental Working Group, set up in 2012, reviews and formulates measures to improve shoreline cleanliness.

It co-organises Shorelines Cleanup Day with schools and community groups to enable participants to learn about protecting the marine environment.
