Regional air quality improves

May 18, 2015

Air quality in the Pearl River Delta region improved last year, with decreases recorded in the level of major pollutants.

Releasing its 2014 report today, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Pearl River Delta Regional Air Quality Monitoring Network said the average annual concentration levels of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and respirable suspended particulates dropped 11%, 8% and 11% on 2013.

However, the average annual concentration level of ozone increased slightly, the report said, calling for further alleviation of the regional photochemical smog problem.

To improve regional air quality, Hong Kong and Guangdong authorities will review emission reduction targets for 2020, and study alleviation measures for the ozone problem.

Last September, Hong Kong, Guangdong and Macau authorities enhanced the monitoring network to release real-time air quality information for the Pearl River Delta region.

The number of monitoring stations increased from 16 to 23 and the number of monitoring parameters rose from four to six.

The enhanced monitoring will be reflected in the 2015 annual report.

The annual report and quarterly statistical monitoring results are available at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Regional Air Quality Monitoring Information System website.
