Secretary for the Environment KS Wong has called on lawmakers to approve funds for the Shek Kwu Chau incinerator, noting there is significant public support for waste-to-energy technology.
Mr Wong told the press today the incinerator, a clean treatment of waste, can help reduce landfill dependency.
He assured that the highest emission standard, the European standard, will be adopted. Air filters will also be added to further reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions.
A district liaison group embracing local people and experts will be formed to oversee the incinerator's design, planning and operation.
Mr Wong said he hopes these measures will ease concerns over the plant, adding the earlier its completion, the better for Hong Kong.
