The Environmental Protection Department has warned the public to avoid outdoor activities as the Air Quality Health Index is near the Serious level in some areas today.
At 1pm the index reached Level 8 in Yuen Long, Tap Mun and Central, meaning the health risk was in the Very High category.
The Hong Kong Observatory forecasts that the weather will be mainly fine in the next couple of days but smog will persist, resulting in the health risk reaching the Very High or Serious categories.
Children, the elderly and people with heart or respiratory illnesses should reduce physical exertion and outdoor activities when pollution reaches such high levels, the department said.
