Legionella found in 5 water towers

October 09, 2014

The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department has found Legionella bacteria in five fresh water cooling towers.

The department tested 77 water samples collected from cooling towers in 72 buildings in September.

Five samples contained bacteria counts at or above the upper threshold of 1,000 colony-forming units per millilitre.

The samples were taken from 98-100 Shau Kei Wan Main Street East in Shau Kei Wan; State Theatre Building in North Point; Yally Industrial Building in Wong Chuk Hang; and two locations in Tsuen Wan: Sun Fung Industrial Building and 27-29 Tsuen Wan Market Street.

Two of the cooling towers have been disinfected, one has been demolished, while arrangements are being made to disinfect the remaining two in Tsuen Wan.
