Glass recycling reaches milestone

July 20, 2014

The number of glass-bottle collection points at housing estates has reached 600, the Environmental Protection Department announced today.

The department set up 151 new glass bottle collection points from April to June, bringing the total to 600, including 57 government quarters, 81 public rental housing estates and 462 private housing estates.

The department plans to have 1,000 collection points by the end of the year, providing a foundation for the future glass-beverage-bottle charging scheme.

It urges the public to recycle glass bottles and adopt the "recycle clean" practice, which entails cleaning the bottles before recycling and removing plastic bags carrying the bottles before dropping them into the recycle bins.

Bottles collected will be delivered to competent recyclers for making eco-pavers or use in other public works projects.

Housing estates wishing to join can email or call 2838 3111.
