Efforts to keep shorelines clean urged

July 05, 2014

Secretary for the Environment CS Wong today called on people to protect the beauty of Hong Kong's marine environment by keeping shorelines clean and conserving marine ecology.

He attended the Clean Shorelines Day at Shek O Beach today which aimed to emphasise the importance of reducing marine refuse.

He encouraged people to be proactive in reducing waste at source and in recycling, and to avoid using disposable items, achieving the goal of "leave no trace".

Mr Wong highlighted a survey that showed over 80% of Hong Kong’s marine refuse, such as plastic bottles and caps, and styrofoam containers, comes from local shoreline and recreational activities.

The Government will, therefore, step up publicity and educational efforts to remind people to reduce waste at source and avoid using disposable items.

Mr Wong and other guests also distributed reusable cutlery sets to beach-goers at Shek O Beach, encouraging them not to use disposable items.

Also launched today was a new television message and related publicity materials to promote the theme "Protect our coast, leave no trace".

The Government will also co-organise a video competition with Ocean Park.
