17 beaches rated ‘good’

May 25, 2012
The Environmental Protection Department has rated water quality at 17 beaches ‘good’, 18 'fair', and  two - Approach Beach and Silver Mine Bay Beach - 'poor' for this weekend.

Compared with last week, Pui O and Kiu Tsui beaches have been upgraded to good, Clear Water Bay First Beach and Stanley Main Beach have been downgraded to fair, and Approach Beach downgraded to poor.

The department has observed temporary deterioration of the water quality at Kiu Tsui and Silverstrand Beaches, largely due to heavy rain. The latest samples taken show the water quality of these beaches has returned to normal.

Many beaches were likely to be more polluted than their grades suggested during and after periods of heavy rain. Bathers should avoid swimming at beaches for up to three days after a storm or heavy rainfall, the department warns.
