Idling engine grace period to end

Penalty notices will be immediately issued to drivers breaching the idling engine prohibition from January 15. No prior verbal warnings will be given.
The Environmental Protection Department said drivers are prohibited from leaving their vehicle engines idling for more than three minutes in any 60-minute period.
Offenders are subject to a $320 fine.
The Motor Vehicle Idling (Fixed Penalty) Ordinance took effect on December 15. In the first month since its implementation, about 460 verbal warnings have been given.
