Tighter fishing laws mooted

October 12, 2011
The Government wants to initiate a bill in the current legislative session to set up a registration system for local fishing vessels to prevent over-fishing.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang said today in his 2011-2012 Policy Address non-local fishing vessels will be prohibited from operating in Hong Kong waters to prevent over-exploitation.

The bill will also set up fisheries protection areas to protect important fish spawning and nursery grounds.

He said legislation banning trawling in Hong Kong waters will begin next year, marking a significant step in the marine conservation and sustainable fisheries.
