Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau says the Government will hold in-depth discussions on the Producer Responsibility Scheme on waste electrical and electronic equipment with the trade later this year.
He told legislators today the discussions will focus on four key aspects - the charging mechanism, the treatment mechanism, import and export control, as well as support for the local recycling and treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment.
The Government will enhance the recovery rate of waste electrical and electronic equipment, and promote a locally-rooted recycling industry.
Mr Yau said the community and trades are generally supportive of the scheme, citing a recent public consultation conducted on it in which more than 2,700 submissions were received. However, more in-depth analysis and overseas advice is needed as the scheme involves aspects like coverage, flow management, proper treatment and sharing of costs.
The Environment Bureau said up to 90% of waste electrical and electronic equipment generated in Hong Kong is recycled, the majority of which is shipped to developing countries for re-use and recovery. Products are mainly televisions, refrigerators, waste plastic and waste metals.
