Timely visit:  Chief Executive Carrie Lam meets British Minister for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Mark Field.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam met visiting British Minister for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Mark Field today.

Mrs Lam told Mr Field his first visit to Hong Kong since assuming office is a timely one as it coincides with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's 20th anniversary, and she will make her first official visit as Chief Executive to the UK next month.

She said Hong Kong has overcome challenges and successfully implemented "one country, two systems" over the past two decades.

She reiterated that the rule of law and judicial independence in Hong Kong are as robust as ever, saying eight overseas non-permanent judges in the Court of Final Appeal are distinguished judges from the UK.

As Chief Executive, she said she will faithfully discharge her constitutional duties to safeguard these essential core values.

Mrs Lam also shared her vision for Hong Kong's future development under the Belt & Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area development, and her pledge to involve young people in public affairs.

Hong Kong and the UK can explore new or enhanced collaboration in many sectors, she added.
