Business brief:  Mrs Lam and Alibaba Group Executive Chairman Jack Ma receive a briefing on the group’s operation.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam had a breakfast meeting with CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee Secretary Han Zheng and Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong in Shanghai today.

She thanked the Shanghai Municipal Government for its support for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, especially the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Shanghai.

She said closer co-operation between Hong Kong and Shanghai will help Mainland companies go global and bring development opportunities, adding both places can leverage on their advantages to jointly promote the Belt & Road Initiative.

Mrs Lam then took the high-speed train to Hangzhou to meet Zhejiang Governor Yuan Jiajun and attend a lunch hosted by him.

She said Zhejiang has been developing rapidly and its achievements in e-commerce and innovation and technology have been remarkable.

Noting the close economic and trade ties it shares with Hong Kong, she said she hopes the two places enhance co-operation in infrastructure, innovation and technology, services, culture and youth issues.

Mrs Lam later met more than 40 representatives of Hong Kong organisations and students to learn about their lives on the Mainland.

She also visited a museum on silk culture, seeing its embroidered costumes and accessories of different eras and characteristics, and its collection of over 1,000 modern and contemporary artefacts.

Before concluding her visit, Mrs Lam went to the Alibaba Group Headquarters where she was briefed by its Executive Chairman Jack Ma on the group’s developments.

She said the HKSAR Government attaches importance to innovation and technology and is striving to develop Hong Kong into a smart city. Mr Ma expressed support for the initiative, saying the group is keen to help Hong Kong reach its goal.

Mrs Lam will return to Hong Kong tomorrow.
