CE deplores school mismanagement

August 15, 2017

Chief Executive Carrie Lam has expressed regret over the chaotic management of Hing Tak School and urged its administrators to resolve its problems when they hold a meeting on August 18.

Speaking to reporters ahead of today's Executive Council meeting, Mrs Lam said while the Government subsidises schools, the responsibility in managing school sponsoring bodies and ensuring quality education lies with the Education Bureau.

The Tuen Mun school is alleged to have "phantom students", those who are absent for extended periods of time, on its register in a bid to boost enrolment.

The bureau has appointed eight managers to the school's Incorporated Management Committee to ensure its proper operation.

Mrs Lam expressed regret that the unstable school environment has made teachers worried, adding she appreciates the professionalism shown by them amid the administrative chaos.

"The Secretary for Education will do all he (can) within his statutory powers to make sure everything will be back to the normal track," she added.
