Although Financial Secretary John Tsang’s decision not to answer questions from some legislators was based on legal advice, the Government later changed its stance on the issue as it treasures its relationship with the Legislative Council.
Chief Executive CY Leung made the comments before today's Executive Council meeting.
Mr Tsang chose not to respond to queries from Leung Kwok-hung, Dr Lau Siu-lai, Nathan Law and Edward Yiu in LegCo yesterday as advised by the Department of Justice.
Mr Leung said he telephoned Chief Secretary Carrie Lam after he became aware of the issue.
He was told arrangements were made for a meeting between her and the LegCo House Committee Chairman and Vice-Chairman.
LegCo was then notified of the Government’s change in stance, he said, adding the non-answer issue could have been handled better as the administration takes its relationship with the legislature seriously.
