Teachers steer independence talks

August 16, 2016

Chief Executive CY Leung said teachers and principals have the responsibility to guide students in the right direction in discussing “Hong Kong independence”.

Speaking ahead of an Executive Council meeting today, Mr Leung said if the idea spreads in Hong Kong, the city’s stability will be affected and its relationship with the Mainland will be seriously damaged. Advocates and participants, especially teenagers, will also pay a heavy price.

Teachers and schools must have a sense of right and wrong in guiding student discussions. This is not about freedom of speech. It is about having a stance on what is right and what is wrong, he said.
