No revival of Mainland visitor plan

May 03, 2016

The Government has no plans to resume multiple-entry individual visit endorsements for Shenzhen residents, Chief Executive CY Leung says.

Speaking to reporters ahead of an Executive Council meeting today, Mr Leung noted that it was only last year that the scheme was amended to allow Shenzhen residents one visit per week to Hong Kong.

He added that the change had helped reduce the number of Mainland tourists taking part in parallel trading.

Mr Leung noted that the Government greatly values the tourism industry's development but also understands that too many tourists exert more pressure on the city and could affect people's daily lives.

The Chief Executive also criticised protests targeting Mainland tourists, saying he objects to anyone tarnishing Hong Kong's hospitable image.
