Reform promotion continues despite challenges

May 16, 2015

Chief Secretary Carrie Lam says she will continue to garner public support towards the political reform proposal in the coming month, despite disruptions by radical protesters.

Speaking to reporters today, Mrs Lam said she is regretful that some radical protesters disrupted a student debate competition that she attended yesterday.

The debate event was not an occasion to discuss constitutional development, she said, adding that the protesters’ actions had affected the event's normal proceedings.

She will continue to promote the Government proposal in the community, to get in touch with the public directly.

Speaking on the reform proposal, Mrs Lam said the Government will strive to get the Legislative Council to pass a resolution to amend the Basic Law Annex I before the summer recess, to implement universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in 2017.

The Government will raise the local legislation proposal after the summer recess if the resolution can be successfully passed, she added.
