LegCo must vote responsibly on reforms

April 10, 2015

Chief Executive CY Leung has said the Legislative Council has the responsibility to vote for Hong Kong people's right to elect the Chief Executive for the first time in history.

Mr Leung told reporters today that Hong Kong people wish to have universal suffrage in electing the Chief Executive and he urged legislators not to deprive them of that right.

He said the constitutional reform package will be submitted to the Legislative Council once the Government has come up with a proposal.

Mr Leung stressed the need to adhere to the Basic Law and the National People's Congress Standing Committee's decision made on August 31, 2014 when implementing universal suffrage.
