CE election changes possible: SJ

March 30, 2015

The law allows changes to be made after universal suffrage is implemented in the 2017 Chief Executive election, and the Central Government is not denying that possibility, Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen said today.

He was referring to remarks by the National People’s Congress Standing Committee's Legislative Affairs Commission Vice-Chairman Zhang Rongshun yesterday.

What Mr Zhang said is that, as a matter of law, changes or improvements to the election methods can be made after 2017 without the need to change the law, Mr Yuen said.

Because the law already allows further changes, there is no need for any "guarantee" as suggested by some people in the community, he added.

Mr Yuen believed that what Mr Zhang said should not cause any alarm or concern for Hong Kong people.
