Conservation liaison to improve

January 16, 2015

Secretary for the Environment KS Wong says the Government will study how to better work with non-governmental organisations and rural area residents to promote nature conservation.

Speaking at a press conference today, Mr Wong said the conservation work will cover country park enclaves and neighbouring rural areas, and must be sustainable and acceptable to villagers nearby.

The Environment Bureau is working with NGOs and villagers of Sai Wan, Sai Kung, to organise a pilot project on the conservation plan. Mr Wong said if it proves successful it will show how similar projects can improve villagers’ livelihood.

Meanwhile, Mr Wong said the Government has invested significant resources into the recycling industry. Earmarking waste charging revenues to support recycling industries is not sustainable, as these revenues will diminish if recycling measures are successful.

The Government will launch the Food Wise Eateries campaign this year to reduce food waste, and will work to reduce electricity consumption in Government buildings by 5% in the next five years, he added.
