Student democracy calls respected

September 25, 2014

The Government respects the aspiration and perseverance of students on democracy, and their expectations for and commitment to the future of Hong Kong.

The Chief Executive’s Office made the statement today in response to a request from a student group to meet with the Chief Executive on issues relating to constitutional reform.

The office said the National People's Congress Standing Committee made a decision on August 31 confirming the election of the Chief Executive by universal suffrage in 2017. The Government will soon launch the next round of public consultation.

It said the community is eager to see the early implementation of universal suffrage for the Chief Executive election in accordance with the law, and it appealed to various sectors to participate in the consultation and forge a consensus through rational discussion.
